Self Defense, 2012, linden, cherry, rose thorns.

First from a set of new shots of both new and old, but recently photographed work. Further exploring integration of other organic matter in carvings, and the contrast between smooth forms and the texture of the rose thorns. A bit of lens distortion in the face which I couldn't be bothered to take out. Disturbingly this makes it look a bit like a female self-portrait, oy.

I like it a lot even though it goes against my basic philosophy of making things rounder and smoother! Might I inquire... what is holding the thorns on?

A bit embarrassingly Elmer's glue. The thorns are a bit delicate and I like to have something weak and reversable holding them on, both to make it more likely they shear off cleanly under stress and to make it easy to get everything off if I need to replace a shattered one.
