Self Defense, 2012 linden, cherry, rose thorns

Here I'm pushing the integration of other organic matter into carving a bit further than I have before. Formally what I'm exploring is the contrast between the smooth light forms and the dark sharp thorns. Conceptually I'm trying to get at defenses, sometimes necessary, sometimes not, but very universally human, if given inhuman form here. Trying to do that without slipping into misogynistic cliche, whether I have succeeded is subject to individual opinion. I'll note that the more I look at the face, the more it looks like a self portrait with breasts. I didn't mean that. Really.

Love it! It see a person who is submissive, or neutral in any case, but should not be provoked. Clever way of showing that without it getting to... obvious. (It is in a way obvious, but without the 'I know what you want to say'-reaction. Don't know if that's very clear. :p)

Thanks, I like that description. Maybe fits with the unintentional self portrait.

Love this piece.

Grin....as for the face - art has a way of bring out the self.

I think it is true, but not necessarily desirable, that most faces I do without a model start to look a bit like me...
